SITUATION

The pilot has some type of driving violation on his or her record that is a result of mixing alcohol and driving (DUI, DWI, DUI/DWI plea bargain resulting in a lesser charge such as reckless driving).

 

 Let me start by answering the question I know is on the minds of most pilots facing this situation:

 

Can a pilot get hired with an alcohol-related violation in his or her background?

Yes. Over the past twenty years I have worked with dozens of pilots that have made the mistake of drinking and driving. Many of these pilots have been offered jobs.

 

However, having said that, these pilots all understood the importance of taking responsibility for their actions and the necessity of being able to prove, with concrete facts, that this error in judgment was an anomaly in their background.
